8 Mystifying Magnesium Deficiency Signs Most People Don’t Know

1. Anxiety & depression

A magnesium deficiency can contribute to nerve dysfunction. For some people, mental issues develop as a result of this nerve dysfunction. Examples of mental complications that emerge include depression, delirium, and lack of emotion. In extreme cases, low magnesium levels can cause a coma.

Researchers think too little magnesium contributes to anxiety development. Magnesium relaxes the body and mind when at adequate levels. The lack of magnesium present in the body is one of the causes of anxiety.

What causes magnesium deficiency?

Magnesium deficiency in healthy people is rare but it can be caused by:

  • a poor diet
  • type 2 diabetes
  • digestive problems such as Crohn’s disease
  • long-term vomiting or diarrhea
  • kidney problems
  • some medicines (for example, fluid tablets and medicines for ulcers or reflux) can cause low magnesium levels if taken for long periods
  • alcoholism

How to get enough magnesium

Seeds, nuts, cocoa, beans, and whole grains are great sources of magnesium. For optimal health, try to eat magnesium-rich foods every day.

Other great sources of magnesium include:

  • flaxseed
  • sunflower seeds
  • chia seeds
  • cocoa
  • coffee
  • cashews
  • hazelnuts
  • oats

Sometimes, people can take in too much magnesium in antacids or laxatives, but this is rare. If you have concerns about this, check with your pharmacist or doctor.
